Outdated Power Systems

1. Fire Hazard Reduction

Old electrical panels, especially those from the mid-20th century (like Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or fuse-based systems), are notorious for failing to trip during overloads, leading to electrical fires. Modern panels have updated safety mechanisms to prevent this.

2. Code Compliance

Outdated panels often don’t meet current electrical codes, which means they might be illegal, especially if you're selling your home. Upgrading ensures compliance with local building regulations.

3. Capacity for Modern Power Needs

Old panels weren't designed for today’s electrical loads—think EV chargers, home offices, AC units, etc. An upgrade gives you the amperage capacity needed for current and future technology.

4. Insurance Issues

Many insurers will deny coverage or increase premiums if your panel is outdated or on a known risk list. Replacing it can improve insurability and even reduce premiums.

5. Reliability and Convenience

Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or limited circuit space are signs of a struggling system. A new panel eliminates these issues and allows for additional circuits when expanding your home.

Two of the most common unsafe electrical panels still in homes today:

  • Zinsco, also know as GTE Sylvania and Challenger. Click here for more info on Zinsco electrical panels.
  • Federal Pacific Electric. Click here for more info on Federal Pacific Electric panels.
