Why Federal Pacific Electrical Panels Are a Hidden Danger in Your Home

Having a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panel in your home is considered a serious safety concern for several well-documented reasons:
1. High Failure Rate of Breakers
FPE breakers, especially the Stab-Lok brand, are notorious for failing to trip during overloads or short circuits. This means:
  • Risk of electrical fires increases dramatically.
  • Circuits can overheat because the breaker doesn't shut off the flow of electricity when it should.
2. Documented Safety Hazards
Multiple independent tests and studies (including those by engineers and the Consumer Product Safety Commission) found that:
  • Up to 60% of FPE breakers failed to trip in dangerous situations.
  • Some breakers may even appear to be off but still conduct electricity — posing electrocution and fire hazards.
3. Manufacturing and Labeling Fraud
FPE was found to have cheated testing standards to get their products UL-listed, despite knowing about the faults. They misrepresented their safety data, which is why the panels were so widespread in the first place.
4. Panels May Appear to Function Normally
That’s part of the danger — many people don’t realize anything is wrong until a serious incident occurs. There are no visible signs of failure until it’s too late.
5. Insurance and Real Estate Issues
  • Some insurance companies may deny coverage or charge higher premiums for homes with FPE panels.
  • It can become a red flag during home inspections and complicate sales.

What Should You Do?
If you have an FPE panel, especially a Stab-Lok model, the safest option is to have it replaced by a licensed electrician. Repairs or breaker replacements don't solve the core problem.
